By the end of the decade, Jackson had become one of America's first major female country and rockabilly singers. Jackson was born in Oklahoma, but her father Tom -- himself a country singer who quit because of the Depression -- moved the family to California in 1941. He bought Wanda her first guitar two years later, gave her lessons, and encouraged her to play piano as well. In addition, he took her to see such acts as Tex Williams, Spade Cooley, and Bob Wills, which left a lasting impression on her young mind. Tom moved the family back to Oklahoma City when his daughter was 12 years old. In 1952, she won a local talent contest and was given a 15-minute daily show on KLPR. The program, soon upped to 30 minutes, lasted throughout Jackson's high school years. It's here that Thompson heard her sing. Wanda Jackson & Red Meat - Mean Mean Man (2007)

Here's a video of rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson backed by country western band Red Meat at Don Quixote's in Felton, California on March 22, 2007. The song performed is "Mean Mean Man," originally recorded in 1958 for Capitol Records. This video was shot with an itty-bitty Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 still camera, which actually looks better than some footage I shot with some bulky camcorders over 20 years ago! Wanda Jackson is an under-rated musician that got started in the music industry thanks to her dear friend Elvis Presley. Exactly why she isn't in the Rock and Roll of Fame is an absolute mystery to me. She's been called the Queen of Rockabily, and I wish more credit would be given to her, as well as Brenda Lee, Janis Martin, and Lorrie Collins, who have really been pioneers in the musical genre known as rock and roll. For more information about this amazing talent, you need to check out her website, and see her LIVE next time she's in your town! for more info, go to: www.WandaJackson.com.

the queen of rockabilly!!!! On July the second, 1953 I was serving time in Tehachapi Four o'clock in the morning I was sleepin' in my cell I heard a whistle blow And I heard somebody yell [Chorus] There's a riot goin' on There's a riot goin' on There's a riot goin' on Up in cell block number nine The trouble all started up in cell block #4 It spread like fire across the prison floor Warden came in with a big tommy gun Bang-bang-bang, tryin' to stop our fun The warden said, come out With your hands up in the air If you don't stop this riot You're all gonna get the chair Two-gun Mathilda said It's too late to quit Pass the dynamite Molly 'Cause man, this fuse is lit They called the state militia To help them win the fight Drove up to the prison In the middle of the night Each and every trooper He looked so tall and fine All the chicks went crazy Up in cell block number nine
